Mandatory Training for HMS Operators

2026

Operators of Helideck Monitoring Systems (HMS) certified to CAP 437 Edition 9 / Standard HMS Revision 9c are required to complete HMS operator training as specified by the standard. The training is intended for radio operators and other personnel responsible for operating an HMS during offshore helicopter operations

Background

The Helideck Monitoring System provides real-time information on environmental and vessel motion conditions that may affect helicopter operations. HMS data supports flight crews and offshore personnel in assessing conditions before and during helicopter movements. The current standard, HMS Rev 9c, establishes requirements for system functionality, displayed information, equipment performance, and operator competency.

Training Objectives

The course provides participants with an understanding of:

  • The purpose and requirements of an HMS Rev 9c system
  • Safe operation of the HMS
  • Interpretation of HMS data and displays
  • Requirements for completing Offshore Weather and Helideck Reports
  • Procedures to be followed during helicopter operations
  • HMS certification and compliance requirements

Successful completion of the course requires passing a knowledge assessment with a minimum score of 80%

Course Information

  • Duration: Approximately 45 minutes
  • Format: Online, self-paced learning
  • Prerequisites: No previous HMS experience required
  • Accreditation: Approved by the Helideck Certification Agency (HCA) and certified by Civil Aviation Authority International (CAAi

Course Development and Applicability

The course was developed by ShoreConnection in collaboration with Mintra to support the industry’s implementation of CAP 437 Edition 9 and Standard HMS Rev 9c requirements.

While ShoreConnection has extensive experience in the design, supply, and support of Helideck Monitoring Systems, the training itself is vendor-independent. The course focuses on the operational requirements and competencies defined by the standard and is therefore suitable for personnel operating any HMS certified to CAP 437 Edition 9 / Standard HMS Rev 9c, regardless of manufacturer or system type. The learning objectives and content are aligned with the requirements of the standard rather than any specific HMS platform.

Industry Adoption

The course has been widely adopted across the offshore energy and maritime sectors, with more than 1200 course licences delivered to industry operators and personnel. The broad uptake reflects the industry’s ongoing implementation of CAP 437 Edition 9 and HMS Rev 9c requirements and the need to ensure that HMS operators receive training that meets the competency requirements specified by the standard.
